Credo Design

I’ve worked as a designer since receiving my Master’s Degree from North Carolina State University. After graduation I become the art director at UNC Public TV; within six months I joined IBM—the first graphic designer in the RTP, NC software division. As a member of a team of designers and programmers from across the corporation, I helped create specifications for all software and hardware documentation, ensuring that all publications met the brand look and feel.  This team coordinated with corporate design to extend this consistency to the marketing look and feel of IBM products. For me, the high point of this work was the honor of meeting and working with design giants Paul Rand and Edward Tuffte.

Update: From 2010 through 2018 I worked full-time as a professor of Graphic and Web design at the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham. I taught a wide range of classes from introduction classes to final portfolio. I will be happy to provide my design resume if you would like to consider me for a teaching or art director opportunity. Both my design and my teaching portfolio are on this website.

Following a painting residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 1995 I left IBM. After a stint in a small design firm, where I learned the workings of a small business, I founded Credo Design in 1996. Today I work as a designer, a painter, and an adjunct professor of design and painting.

Though my early background is in fine art and English, my love of design and typography dates back to the Granite Press, a small letter press in rural Maine. I became a partner in 1975, working on broadsides and small press books, and setting type upside down and backwards.

I still love to work by hand, and much of my current design combines hand-made elements with advanced technology.

Resume available upon request.
